Musings for July

"Dappled"

Monet has created a cool, soothing place to wander through…the dappling caused by the sun shining through the trees onto the plants and pathway give flashes of light and sudden color before they are subdued once again.

And isn’t that how our lives seem to be? We wander through our existence, occasionally seeing and feeling those flashes of color and light, those moments when we rejoice…

And then, we return to our wanderings.

“Monarch butterflies”

In front of me is a large printed puzzle page with a large blue, black, and orange butterfly. It doesn’t move, and is much larger than a real butterfly.

It will exist for far longer than a monarch, whose trembling wings and soft sounds will die away soon.

Such is life.

“Rose-moles” (word from poem)

A mole burrows underground and lives its life there, nearly blind. A rose reaches for the sky, glowing in its beauty shared.

How, then, is a mole to see a rose? To enjoy its beauty and scent? Is a rose-mole one that burrows under the rose, weakening its roots, perhaps toppling it over, ending its existence?

Or, perhaps, it carefully works around those roots, aerating and nurturing them quietly, out of sight, without acknowledgement — helping the world to see the beauty above…
